Dear Reader,

Happy Feb 14th — Valentine’s Day. Also, welcome to another post in February under the theme Love & Grief. My boyfriend inspired this story as we often reflect on how we first met. One sunny day at mini-golf he asked a question that stumped me: What was the last bad movie that you saw?

I was stumped. Note this usually does not happen especially when it was a topic outside of science and math. This question impressed me because it was a unique approach and left me racking my brain. Most people usually ask you a question in the realm of what you like.

Admittedly, this one question put him on a different level from most guys I have met. He was in the habit of asking questions being a writer. Curiosity was his wheelhouse and I can tell you that it has served us and the relationship well.

There were many layers to this question:

  • What genre was the movie?

It would clue him into my likes and dislikes. This could be used to see if we have anything in common, providing further insight for a future date or if he should run for the hills.

  • Why did the movie suck? (In your opinion)

Again, it gained further insight into an individual’s tolerance and perspective. I cannot quite remember which movie I said. Maybe it was 2012. Remember when the guy was outrunning a plane faster than Usain Bolt? It was very unrealistic but hey it was the movies where anything goes.

  • What did you do when you realized that the movie sucked?

This would indicate how you would act when you knew that your time was wasted. Did you grin and bear with it hoping it would get better? Or rather did you walk out of the cinema or simply change the channel if you were watching from home? Otherwise, it is a segue to opening up more about yourself like explaining that you have a desire to write for example.

Writers have a thirst of knowledge

One thing about my novelist is that he is curious. Before I started to write on Medium, I searched on Pinterest how to start as a writer. Apart from the usual axiom of write frequently and regularly, writers read a lot. The more you know, the more they are able to render a subject in their mind’s eye in whichever way they please.

Another benefit is that writers are usually open to trying something new at least once. Even better if you have experienced it before, they are fully engaged when a personal source is nearby. They take time to analyze aspects of an experience

If they ask you a lot of questions, it’s a good sign that they are interested in what you have to say.

Writers see things from a different perspective

I would say that the writers are perceptive as many times their job requires them to consider multiple angles.

Their many dimensions also add to yours. Your horizons become expanded and a whole new world emerges, so to speak. A writer’s mind is their world.

Appreciate when they invite you into it. Chances are, you are one of a selected few.

If you are lucky, you would be gifted some original work

Writers are wordsmiths and have a word with words. They know what to say and how to say. Seeing that today is Valentine’s Day, it’s difficult for me to imagine that a writer just goes with what was written by someone else.

If you want something to read right, isn’t it best to write it yourself? It’s even better when you have great handwriting!

Maybe the movie question was only just a harmless question and I was overthinking as per usual. Thanks for reading. I know it was short and this post also had a secondary objective: to express appreciation for my boyfriend.

Happy Valentine’s Day Mr. GQ! 💕

He reads every post and is one of my biggest supporters for this creative outlet.

Thank you for all of your support through everything. I am truly grateful for you being in my life and toast to many more years of happiness together.
